An article on WebMD discusses the link between vitamin D and autoimmune diseases.
From the article: "A new genetic analysis lends support to the idea that the vitamin interacts with genes specific for colorectal cancer, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and other diseases, says Oxford University genetic researcher Sreeram Ramagopalan."
Dr. Walter P. Maksymowych says in his article, "Expanding The Therapeutic Horizon In Ankylosing Spondylitis" (SAA Members Section), that he has observed vitamin D in ankylosing spondylitis patients. "Good nutrition also means 800 units of vitamin D per day. It is surprising how many patients with AS are vitamin D deficient -- about 20% in my practice. North Americans are not great milk drinkers, and if you are amongst them, then over-the-counter supplementation is important."
